We attended an intensive two-day phenology workshop hosted by the National Phenology Network and the USGS Powell Center last week. To improve the value of our data, we have increased the number of pairs of plant species we will observe in the park. Monitoring multiple individuals of a species/genus helps to reduce “noise” in the data. We’ve added four trees (American Sweetgum, Red Maple, Tuliptree, and White Oak). The White Oak is a genus counterpart to the Swamp White Oak. We’ve incorporated two shrubs; both are American Witch-hazels.

Volunteer with us! Monitor a tree or a shrub for one season or for an entire year in Washington Square Park. We provide free training. This role is perfect for a high school student who has to complete community service hours, a university student seeking a research project, a neighborhood resident, or someone taking their lunch break in the park. We will work with you! Contact us: localnaturelab at gmail dot com.
